This is a little snippet I found in my desk drawer today that I had written this past July -
Sort of a farewell to summer...
Sunset at West Meadow beach. The boys are looking for shells with my mom. I am guarding the purses, beach chairs, damp towels, plastic shovels and the half-eaten bag of pretzels currently constituting our camp. A balmy breeze gently blows my hair in every which direction, while the sun bathes everything about me in a happy, golden haze. Despite the fact that the beach is relatively full ( not with people swimming, oddly enough, it is a bit chilly for that tonight ) I don't feel crowded in the least. In front of me, I have some children building a sandcastle and splashing in the low tide waters of the Long Island Sound. To my right is an older couple sitting in canopy chairs, meditatively staring into the water. The man was doing yoga poses just minutes ago. In back of me are three separate families, all enjoying a picnic dinner. To my left is a young couple with a baby girl, all three in coordinating outfits. They are taking advantage of the incredible lighting with a professional photographer.
I may hear snippets of conversations, the occasional shriek of laughter or cry, but overwhelmingly, the sounds of nature, the shrieking seagulls, the soothing water, the rushing wind dominates the evening tone. The sun is ever dropping into the distance, bidding us goodnight and within the next hour the beach with be empty.Yes, New Yorkers may talk and think a mile a minute, but maybe the Lord, in His goodness, gives us evenings such as this, that lend towards thoughts of the Creator. In the ever changing, uncertainty of life, God is the one constant factor. Knowing that the One who designed the piercing beauty of this sunset is also the Author of my life is as reassuring as the waters of the Sound, gently lapping at my feet.
